It's not rocket science... High-rise v. Skyscraper

What is the difference between a high-rise and a skyscraper?

“Non-Engineer” Answer: Today, the term High-rise can apply to both residential and commercial buildings that are over 20 stories whereas the term skyscraper applies to commercial buildings of “exceptional height”.

Explanation: The term Skyscraper was reportedly coined in the late 1700’s and was used to describe buildings of exceptional height. Such buildings included churches and towers. The term High-rise was reportedly coined in the 1950’s to describe buildings that exceeded 20 floors weather commercial or residential.

Commentary: What were Skyscrapers when the term was coined in the late 1700’s are by today’s standards merely tall or at best high-rise. So, a Skyscraper is a high-rise but a high-rise is not necessarily a Skyscraper.
