What is roof flashing?
“Non-Engineer” Answer: It’s found in the corners and on the edges, and it keeps the water out.
Explanation: When the roofer says … "I fixed the leak, it was a flashing problem", what he is saying is that the flashing was allowing water to get past the roofing barrier. Flashing is an important part of keeping water out of our houses and buildings. Flashings are components that are usually sheet metal (copper, galvanized steel, lead, or aluminum) or flexible impervious fabric or plastic material that is installed to prevent water from getting in at angles and joints. Nothing in construction is straight forward so we have to use waterproofing flashings at locations on the roof or even the walls where there are transitions, joints, or changes in material. Flashings usually keep water from going uphill or against gravity. More than likely you have metal flashings to protect the joint between your roof and second story walls and you have flexible flashings between your window frames and the barrier protecting your walls.
Commentary: Generally when a roofer talks about roof flashing, he’s not talking about the guy who ran across the soccer or football field naked and got tackled by the cops.
